Education:

Originally from Burgundy, Raphaël Fourquemin studied architecture in France (Paris) and Australia (Perth). Alongside his studies, he worked for several architectural firms, notably on housing renovation and building pathology projects.

Highly sensitive to environmental issues since childhood, he specializes in old buildings, ecological renovation, and bioclimatic housing.

Graduating from ENSA Paris la Villette in 2007, he then explored alternative living styles while completing a Master's degree in Urban Planning Research in Urban Policy at the Paris Institute of Urban Planning.

Education:

Upon arriving in Béarn in 2011, Raphael worked as a freelancer and then set up his own business as an architect in 2013.

In 2014, he launched an experimental project to transform a former industrial warehouse into a bioclimatic townhouse based on the deconstruction and reuse of materials. The experimental aspect of deconstruction and reuse led him to undertake the project himself, building it himself for four years, allowing him to acquire genuine technical expertise in materials and installation and removal methods. He won first prize in the Circular Building Trophies, in the residential building renovation category, organized by Booster du Réemploi in 2021.

Following this experience, he founded, with other construction professionals (architects, craftsmen, design firms), the IDRE-Interprofessional Association for Deconstruction and Reuse, which he led until 2023. The objective of this organization is to promote the principles of deconstruction and reuse throughout the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region through action research. For five years, he worked to raise awareness and support public (social housing, local authorities) and private project owners in their projects.

He then conducted numerous resource studies (material identification, determination of careful removal methods, site and storage organization, and recirculation planning), which were the starting point for the method. These studies covered a wide variety of building types, ranging from timber-framed lofts to public buildings (Pau Central Post Office, Col du Somport Nordic Ski Center, etc.) and multi-family housing.

He also led several complete building deconstruction projects with the aim of maximizing material recovery. During these projects, he developed various careful removal methodologies, particularly for plasterboard, and explored and designed various tools.

In parallel with his work on buildings, Raphaël Fourquemin also explored the issue of vegetation, organizing the salvage of plants and the recycling of tree trunks from timber work.

In 2023, he will resume his work as a project manager with the aim of using his expertise to help project owners wishing to preserve existing heritage.

Raphaël Fourquemin views his work as an architect primarily as providing the project owner with the skills, tools, and experience needed to achieve results that meet their expectations and needs.
